In its double aspect of literary genre and means of communication, epistolary expression was of great interest to Ennodus (473-521). The exchange of letters was a discreet and efficient way of maintaining relations within the Gallo-Roman aristocracy. The impression of superficiality which arises today from these letters results mainly from our difficulty in understanding the codes of epistolary exchange, in extracting the different degrees of meaning and in restoring an intrinsic ambiguity. Then the predilection of Ennodus for the « epistolary religion » is not foreign to the ambiguity of this literary genre which allows one to say more than one seems to.
