Sixteen irremovabe magistrates feel victim of the 1883 Republican purge in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais. The eviction hit more severely the hierarchy in our region than in the rest of the territory. Judicial notabilities, rich, in their mid-fifties, with distinguished social origins, Catholic, close to the older powers, were thus eliminated by the Republicans in order to weaken the local dynasties. Yet political motivations were preeminent in the choice of those excluded from the magistracy. Faithful servants of the previous regimes, they all had demonstrated their hostility to the Republic, mostly when the 1880 anti-religious decrees were published.
