Cicero’s Staging of Historical Speech : Rhetoric and Political Ideology. Cicero identifies the accomplished orator as an ideal statesman. Because of this, we have been able to study the importance Cicero gives to history both by way of his definition of the orator and by way of the status he assigns to oratory in relation to the exercise of rhetoric. We shall now examine how Cicero sets the scene in staging historical speeches as political discourse. More specifically, we shall examine his use of prosopopoeia in giving voice to such exemplary figures as Appius Claudius in the Pro Caelio. The outcome of this will be to identify how he deploys previously observed historiographical notions in order to understand how Milo’s or Cicero’s speeches...
