La nécropole du Haut-Empire de Tavant (Indre-et-Loire)

In 1997, 26 burial places belonging to a necropolis were excavated in Tavant (Indre-et-Loire). They were inhumations, and eight of them were sarcophagi. The site dates back to between the 3rd quarter of the Ist century B.C. and the second half of the IIIrd century, and its material is relatively abundant and varied, testifying to the affluence of the then inhabitants, but also to the existence of funerary practices which on occasion date back to the Gallic period, as well as to the apotropaic functions. The memory of ancestors is also evoked, with a first burial of an adult individual at arms which marked the spatial organisation of this burial ground, up to the end of the Ist century. Up to then, this part of the burial ground seems to have been devoted to children under six. These links with the past were eventually lost, however, and in the IIIrd century the burial places did not take the previous heritage into account any more.En 1997, 26 sépultures d'une nécropole ont été fouillées à Tavant (Indre-et-Loire). Il s'agit d'inhumations, dont huit en sarcophage. Cet ensemble, dont la datation s'échelonne du troisième quart du Ier s. av. J.-C. à la seconde moitié du IIIe s., a livré un mobilier relativement abondant et varié qui témoigne de l'aisance de la population concernée, de pratiques funéraires dont l'origine remonte parfois à la période gauloise, et parfois de fonctions apotropaïques. Le souvenir des ancêtres est aussi évoqué, avec la première inhumation d'un individu adulte en arme qui a marqué l'organisation de cette nécropole jusqu'à la fin du Ier s. ap. J.-C. Il semble alors que cette partie de la nécropole soit réservée à des enfants de moins de six ans.
