The capital of the Gévaudan, Anderitum, installed on a pre-Roman site, reached its maximum extent in the second century, and then declined from the end of that century until at least the sixth. However, it probably remained the civitas-capital at least until the end of the fourth century and was perhaps the original seat of the bishopric ; the latter is not securely attested at Mende, which replaced it as the centre of power, before the eighth century.
