The medieval cemetery is represented in thousands of pictures dating from the 13th to 16th century. Without being photographs, and despite their often highly symbolic character, they realistically portray the surface features of the place (high cross, grave-crosses, tombstones, prie-Dieu, vegetation, ossuaries, chapels and mortuary lamps) and even its "infrastructure" (the grave-cut, coffin, the corpse with different means of containing the body, and grave-furnishings). While such pictures may bring the cemetery back to life, notably in portraying its colours (red painting of the crosses or black of the tombstones, and greenery of the vegetation), they scarcely ever feature a hermit's or caretaker's dwelling, or a guard-dog's kennel.
