Prior to any rational use of the epistolary corpus of Isidore of Pelusium, one must be certain of the authenticity of the elements of which it is composed. This entails a meticulous research of the manuscript tradition, direct and indirect, of the 2000 letters of this corpus and the study of all the accounts concerning Isidore of Pelusium and the works ascribed to him. In the epistolary collections, Isidore of Pelusium is considered to be one of the masters of the genre, along with Libanius, Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus and Synesius.
