In this communication, we will focus on the relations that Gregory maintained with the temporal sovereigns —the Byzantine emperors and the Germanic kings— concerning matters dealing with religion, inseparable from politics at that time. His epistolary as well as his exegetical and moral works provide many data on the Gregorian conception of monarchical power and the ideal feature of the Christian prince, which was a novelty in the VIth century and was to determine papal doctrine during the Middle Ages. Applying this ideal to real life, Gregory exhibits an extraordinary capacity for adaptation to the complex realities of his world, and becomes the first Pope to establish close and continuous relations with the Germanic kingdoms in order to u...
