Política de lo sacro y sacralización de la política según el epistolario de Gregorio Magno

In this communication, we will focus on the relations that Gregory maintained with the temporal sovereigns —the Byzantine emperors and the Germanic kings— concerning matters dealing with religion, inseparable from politics at that time. His epistolary as well as his exegetical and moral works provide many data on the Gregorian conception of monarchical power and the ideal feature of the Christian prince, which was a novelty in the VIth century and was to determine papal doctrine during the Middle Ages. Applying this ideal to real life, Gregory exhibits an extraordinary capacity for adaptation to the complex realities of his world, and becomes the first Pope to establish close and continuous relations with the Germanic kingdoms in order to universalize the Christiana res publica to the regna which occupied the old territory of the Roman Empire. We do not seek to analyze the various doctrinal or disciplinary problems, but rather their use for political goals; this instrumentalisation, together with his monarchical doctrine, constitutes a pillar of an aspect of Gregorian thought that could be called hagiopolitics.Dans cette communication, on se centrera sur les relations que Grégoire entretient avec les souverains temporels – empereurs byzantins ou rois germaniques – à propos des affaires qui touchent au phénomène religieux, indissociable de la politique à cette époque. À ce sujet, son œuvre épistolaire, ainsi que sa production exégétique et morale, nous offrent une multitude de données sur sa conception du pouvoir monarchique et du modèle idéal du prince chrétien, qui constitue une nouveauté au VIe s. et qui marquera la doctrine pontificale pendant le Moyen Âge. En appliquant cet idéal à la réalité, Grégoire fait montre d’une capacité d’adaptation extraordinaire aux complexes réalités de son monde, et devient ainsi le premier pape ayant des relations étroites et suivies avec les royaumes germaniques, avec l’intention d’universaliser la Christiana res publica aux regna qui occupent l’ancien territoire de l’Empire romain. Nous ne prétendons pas analyser les différents problèmes doctrinaux ou disciplinaires, mais leur utilisation à des fins politiques ; cette instrumentalisation, associée à sa doctrine monarchique, constitue le pilier d’un aspect de la pensée grégorienne qu’on bien pourrait nommer hagiopolitique.Maymo i Capdevila Pere, Delmaire Roland, Desmulliez Janine, Gatier Pierre-Louis.
