La capacité héraldique dans la Flandre maritime. Essai d'analyse quantitative

The question of the number of people allowed a coat of arms has long been debated in the heraldic field. Yet no approach hased on non-normative sources has ever been undertaken. The « Armorial Général de France », compiled after the November 1696 edict, seems though to offer sufficient material. A partial inquiry by the Intendant of Maritime Flanders yielded the following results. Heraldic capacity was, in the opinion of the authorities, mostly an urban phenomenon. Moreover it was closely connected to a social function. On the whole, only the most privileged estates and the professions took an active part in heraldic life.De nombreuses discussions ont cours dans le domaine héraldique au sujet du nombre de gens autorisés à porter des armoiries. Une approche basée sur des sources non normatives n'a cependant jamais été entreprise. L'Armoriai Général de France, rédigé suite à l'édit de novembre 1696, offre pourtant matière à suffisance. L'enquête partielle de l'intendance de Flandre Maritime livra les résultats suivants. La capacité héraldique était, aux yeux de l'autorité, un phénomène principalement urbain. Au surplus, elle était fortement liée à la fonction sociale. En fin de compte, seuls les états privilégiés et les professions de la plume participaient activement à la vie héraldique.Op heraldisch gebied bestaat er heel wat discussie over het aantal personen dat recht had op een wapenschild. Hierbij heeft men de niet normatieve bronnen steeds buiten beschou- wing gelaten. Het Algemeen Armoriaal van Frankrijk , opgesteld na het edict van novem- ber 1696, biedt nochtans voldoende stof. Een deelonderzoek van de generaliteit van maritiem Vlaanderen levert de volgende resultaten op. Het heraldisch vermogen, was voor de overheid, vooral een stedelijk fenomeen. Daarbij komt dat het in sterke mate verbonden was aan de sociale functie.
