Stressing the shifting international and professional affiliations of American intellectuals during the years of American participation in World War I, and focussing on the lively, and often bitter, controversies among them on the issue of the intellectual's responsibilities in wartime, this paper attempts to go beyond the static categorizing of intellectual types or moral outrage at the sight of so many intellectuals rushing to the service of bellicose passions and the interests of the state. Within a conceptual framework derived from Antonio Gramsci, Robert Brym, Magali Sarfatti Larson and Pierre Bourdieu, the individual intellectual's political behavior is seen as part of a complex, dynamic social process.Dans cette étude des intellectue...
