1917-1918 : America’s Warring Intellectuals

Stressing the shifting international and professional affiliations of American intellectuals during the years of American participation in World War I, and focussing on the lively, and often bitter, controversies among them on the issue of the intellectual's responsibilities in wartime, this paper attempts to go beyond the static categorizing of intellectual types or moral outrage at the sight of so many intellectuals rushing to the service of bellicose passions and the interests of the state. Within a conceptual framework derived from Antonio Gramsci, Robert Brym, Magali Sarfatti Larson and Pierre Bourdieu, the individual intellectual's political behavior is seen as part of a complex, dynamic social process.Dans cette étude des intellectuels américains pendant les années de participation américaine à la Première guerre mondiale, l'accent est mis à la fois sur les accidents qui marquent leurs trajectoires professionnelles et les débats qui les opposent, souvent violemment, sur le problème de l'engagement politique de l'intellectuel en temps de guerre. Evitant de s'en tenir à une typologie d'intellectuels de caractère statique ou à une attitude d'indignation morale devant le spectacle de tant d'empressement à se mettre au service des passions guerrières ou des intérêts de l'Etat, on s'est efforcé, au moyen de concepts empruntés à Antonio Gramsci, à Robert Brym, à Magali Sarfatti Larson et à Pierre Bourdieu, de faire apparaître le comportement politique de l'intellectuel comme partie intégrante d'une dynamique sociale complexe.Reimen Jacqueline. 1917-1918 : America’s Warring Intellectuals.
