L'Ile at Martigues is situated in the middle of the Caronte inlet, which connects the Berre Bay with the sea. It is the only passage for the route that fallows the western shore of the bay. Despite its unfavorable topographical situation (the land relief is less than 3 meters above sea level), a settlement was established there at the beginning of the fifth century B.C.
