The article analyses the dramatic changes that have occurred in Southern political life since the early 1960s. When the national Democratic party effectively advocated equal rights for blacks, the rationale for the South's unique one-party system collapsed, blacks entered the political process, and the present top-heavy two-party system took hold. At first, Southern Republicans sought to ride the racial blacklash to power. But when the race issue abated in the 1970s, clever Democratic politicians forged a powerful, ideologically diverse black-white coalition that is the mainstay of the current Southern Democracy.
