Immigrants, Minorities and the Paradoxes of Plenty

Over the past twenty years, a period during which services have replaced manufacturing as the most important component of New York City's economic base, New York has also attracted over a million foreign immigrants most of whom have come from the Third World. These two developments have produced a new ethnic division of labor, in which immigrants and native-born minorities, that is, blacks and Puerto Ricans, occupy distinct economic niches. Ethnic group location within New York"s post-industrial economy is the consequence of disparities in skills, predispositions and social resources. Positional differences, in turn, spur conflict among various immigrant and native minority groups over the allocation and maintenance of distinct economic niches.Au cours des vingt dernières années au cours desquelles les services sont devenus la part la plus importante de l'économie new yorkaise, au détriment de l'industrie, New York a attiré plus d'un million d'immigrants, en grande partie en provenance du Tiers Monde. Ces deux phénomènes ont provoqué une nouvelle distribution ethnique sur le marché du travail selon laquelle immigrants et minorités — Noirs et Portoricains — occupent des espaces économiques distincts. L'emplacement des groupes ethniques dans le champ économique post-industriel de New York est fonction des disparités de compétences, de prédispositions et de ressources sociales.
