The translator's technique is based both on conscious and unconscious grounds, and, as any other, is relevant of a psychoanalytical approach. Can it rely on the psychoanalyst's method ? The freudian school suggests that the Traumdeutung, in which Freud translates the language of the unconscious into clear terms, could provide the translator with a model. Jung sets the signs of language, used for communication, apart from the dream — symbols, embodying the transformations of libido. He advocates the virtues of ambiguous language and warns interpreters against any pretence at exhaustive translation.
