Écrire grec en alphabet latin : le cas des documents protobyzantins

In the 6th century, at a time when Latin ceased to be used as an official language in the protobizantine State, the trend to transliterate Greek words in Latin alphabet developed in the East. From a phonetic viewpoint, transliteration from one language to another was done at that time according to a relatively homogeneous usage, albeit different from the school standard. These transliterations are preferably studied in original documents rather than in medieval manuscripts, where the written forms were altered by the copyists and sometimes by modern publishers. Starting with a new inscription from 533, our study aims at delineating the extent and modalities of this phenomenon by reviewing the relevant types of documents: the official minutes from the Imperial administration (§ 1 & 2), the Justinian legislation (§ 4) and its Greek epitomes (§ 5), seals of Imperial officials (§ 7); all of these suggest a trend inspired by the State, which does not spread beyond its own sphere of influence. The adoption of transliteration by one occidental bishop is but an exception that proves the rule (§ 3); as for the use of the Latin alphabet in private notarial deeds in Egypt, it reveals the affinities between these acts and public acts. In a transitional Empire where knowledge of Latin is mostly limited to the knowledge of the alphabet, the fact that Greek is written in “Roman” characters reveals the prestige of this alphabet. Only the Imperial seals, from the middle of the 7th century, and later the Imperial coins in the 8th and 10th century, maintain this usage of the late Antiquity.Au VIe s., en même temps que l’État protobyzantin cesse d’utiliser le latin comme langue officielle, se développe en Orient la mode de translittérer en alphabet latin des mots de langue grecque. Du point de vue phonétique, la translittération d’une écriture à l’autre suit à cette époque des habitudes relativement homogènes, mais qui s’écartent souvent de la norme scolaire. Mieux que la tradition manuscrite médiévale, où ces graphies sont plus ou moins altérées du fait des copistes, et parfois des éditeurs modernes, les documents originaux permettent de prendre la mesure de ces translittérations. À partir d’une nouvelle inscription datée de 533, l’étude cherche à préciser l’étendue et les modalités du phénomène en passant en revue les catégories documentaires pertinentes : procès-verbaux officiels de l’administration impériale (§ 1 et 2), législation justinienne (§ 4) avec ses épitomés grec (§ 5), sceaux des fonctionnaires impériaux (§ 7), tout indique une mode inspirée par l’État et qui ne s’étend guère au-delà de sa propre sphère. La souscription isolée d’un évêque, d’origine occidentale, est une exception qui confirme la règle (§ 3) ; et les souscriptions notariales d’actes privés égyptiens (§ 6), en adoptant l’écriture latine, affichent leur affinité avec les actes publics. Dans un empire en transition où la connaissance du latin ne va plus guère au-delà de l’alphabet, écrire le grec en caractères dits « romains » témoigne du prestige reconnu à cet alphabet. Seuls les sceaux impériaux à partir du milieu du VIIe s., et le monnayage impérial du VIIIe au Xe s., prolongeront cet usage de l’Antiquité tardive.Feissel Denis.
