The first art object from the Gravettian site of Zaraysk (Russia, Moscow Region), discovered during the excavations of 2001, is a figurine of a bison made from mammoth ivory. The statuette, a real masterpiece of Palaeolithic sculpture, is dated around 22000 BP. In comparison with known examples of mobiliary art objects from Eastern and Central Europe, this creation not only represents very early evidence of artistic expression in the naturalistic style, a high level of expertise, and stylistic features, but is also very remarkable for its size and, no less important, the fact that it has a specific stratified context.
