Abstract : A place or a thing is not exotic because ofits own characteristics but rather because of somebody who sees and describes it that way. The paper presents exotization as a process involved in the geographical production of otherness, specific to the European and colonial context. The Occidental ambiguous fascination for the exotic does not apply to anyfaraway country : the attribution of this "privilege " takes place within the political and cultural history of colonization. The exotization process implies the objectification and the commoditization of the Other, reduced to a stereotyped role in apicturesque show.
