L. D. Reynolds has edited four major monuments of Latin prose for Oxford Classical Texts : Seneca's Letters to Lucilius (1965) and his Dialogues (1977), Salluste (1991) and Cicero's De finibus (1998). In order to help future editors, he discusses here his approach to editing and his reactions to the widely varied manuscript traditions and the more or less solidly established texts. Using demonstrations gleaned from his experience as an editor, he takes special interest in illustrating the proper use of stemmas (strongly emphasising their practical utility), how the study of clausulae can be of help, and the difficulties that arise when one must choose between medieval variants and readings attested in Antiquity.L.
