(1) The Latin translation of Theophrastus' Metaphysics by Bartholomaeus of Messina was probably based upon a copy made from the manuscript J ( Vindobonens is phil. gr. 100, saec. X) between 1260, after which date William of Moerbeke probably brought J from the East to Italy, and 1266, the end of the reign of King Manfred of Sicily, who had commissioned it. (2) The translation by Gregorius Tiphernas, commissioned by Pope Nicholas V during his reign (1447-55), was never published but survives in two manuscripts, Florent. Lauren- tianus 79. 15 and Vat.
