Three Latin Translations of Theophrastus' Metaphysics

(1) The Latin translation of Theophrastus' Metaphysics by Bartholomaeus of Messina was probably based upon a copy made from the manuscript J ( Vindobonens is phil. gr. 100, saec. X) between 1260, after which date William of Moerbeke probably brought J from the East to Italy, and 1266, the end of the reign of King Manfred of Sicily, who had commissioned it. (2) The translation by Gregorius Tiphernas, commissioned by Pope Nicholas V during his reign (1447-55), was never published but survives in two manuscripts, Florent. Lauren- tianus 79. 15 and Vat. Urb. lot. 208 ; it was certainly based upon the manuscript A (Vat. gr. 1302, saec. ΧΙΠ-XIV), and the marginal and interlinear emendations in A are due to Tiphernas himself. (3) The translation often printed in the 16th century and ususally attributed to Cardinal Bessarion cannot have been composed by him, as it cannot have been composed earlier than 1480, while Bessarion died in 1472 ; the author of the translation cannot be established with certainty, but it seems to have been based upon the Aldine edition of the Metaphysics (1497) and may have been commissioned in connection with its firt publication by H. Stephanus in Paris in 1515. Since these Latin translations are all based upon surviving Greek manuscripts, they can contribute little of significance to the constitution of the text ; their interest resides more in what they can tell us about the history of its transmission and diffusion.(1) La traduction latine de la Métaphysique de Théophraste de Bartholomé de Messine est probablement fondée sur une copie du manuscrit J (Vindobonensis phil. gr. 100, s. X) faite entre 1260 (un an avant que Guillaume de Moerbeke apporte probablement J de l'Est en Italie) et 1266, date de la fin du règne du roi Manfred de Sicile, qui l'avait commandée. (2) La traduction de Gregorius Tiphernas commandée par le pape Nicolas V pendant son règne (1447-1455) n'a jamais été publiée, mais il en existe deux manuscrits : Florent. Laurentianus 79, 15 et Vat. Urb. lat. 208 ; elle est fondée certainement sur le manuscrit A (Vat. gr. 1302, s. XIII-XIV). Les émendations marginales et interlinéaires dans A sont l'oeuvre de Tiphernas lui-même. (3) La traduction souvent imprimée au XVIe siècle et attribuée traditionnellement au cardinal Bessarion ne peut avoir été rédigée par lui, car elle ne peut avoir été composée avant 1480, tandis que Bessarion est mort en 1472. L'auteur de la traduction ne peut pas être identifié avec certitude, mais celle-ci semble se fonder sur l'édition aldine de la Métaphysique (1497) et peut avoir été commandée lors de sa première édition, par Henri Etienne à Paris en 1515. Puisque ces trois traductions latines se fondent sur des manuscrits grecs qui existent encore, elles ne sauraient représenter un apport notable à la constitution du texte de Théophraste. Leur intérêt réside plutôt dans les indications qu'elles nous fournissent sur l'histoire de la transmission et de la diffusion du texte.Most Glenn W.
