Abstract. - The regional physiographic framework appears simple with a series of northeast trending units roughly parallel to the edge of the continental shelf. Among them, the Piedmont and Coastal Plain are relatively low regions. In fact, the crustal structure is more complex : crystalline rocks of the Blue Ridge and inner Piedmont were thrust over shelf sediments belonging to the late Precambrian/early Paleozoic continental passive margin of the North American craton. This palaeomargin has the trend of a strong gravity gradient. The US Atlantic provinces have been marked by compressional tectonism soon after the opening of the ocean.
