La façade atlantique des Etats-Unis, bordure continentale d'une vieille marge passive (The atlantic provinces of the U.S., the continental edge of an old passive margin)

Abstract. - The regional physiographic framework appears simple with a series of northeast trending units roughly parallel to the edge of the continental shelf. Among them, the Piedmont and Coastal Plain are relatively low regions. In fact, the crustal structure is more complex : crystalline rocks of the Blue Ridge and inner Piedmont were thrust over shelf sediments belonging to the late Precambrian/early Paleozoic continental passive margin of the North American craton. This palaeomargin has the trend of a strong gravity gradient. The US Atlantic provinces have been marked by compressional tectonism soon after the opening of the ocean. It is presumed that horizontal stresses could leap to creep processes directed from the ocean to the continent in the lower ductile crust and upper mantle of the Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont. Creep movement might be blocked against the thicker and cooler proto-American crust. This could be the long-duration mechanism able to explain the sustained uplift of the Blue Ridge and the relatively stable position of the Blue Ridge Scarp above the Piedmont because it is controlled mainly by the deep crustal properties.Résumé. - Le dispositif morphostructural de la façade atlantique des Etats-Unis est d'apparence simple : juxtaposition de domaines allongés parallèlement au rebord de la plate-forme continentale. Piedmont et Plaine Côtière forment une zone basse qui s'élargit du New Jersey à la Géorgie. Cette simplicité masque une réalité complexe : allochtonie des roches cristallines de la Blue Ridge et du Piedmont interne au-dessus de sédiments de plate-forme et de l'ancienne marge passive du protocontinent américain datant de plus de 500 millions d'années, soulignée par un fort gradient gravimétrique. Depuis l'ouverture de l'Atlantique un régime en compression caractérise la façade atlantique des Etats-Unis, avec des contraintes horizontales dirigées de l'océan vers le continent. Un fluage de matière vers le continent se produirait dans la croûte inférieure ductile sous la Plaine Côtière et le Piedmont externe, avec en corollaire la surrection de la croûte plus épaisse située sous le Piedmont interne et la Blue Ridge. Les formes de relief de premier ordre (escarpement de la Blue Ridge) seraient contrôlées par des discontinuités dans la croûte profonde ; les formes d'échelle moyenne dépendent de la structure de la croûte supérieure.Battiau-Queney Yvonne.
