The annotated margins of the Greek text on which Jacques Amyot based the first edition of his translation of Heliodorus' Aethiopica (1547) have never been fully exploited for the light that they can throw on the Greek manuscript tradition of Heliodorus or the textual history of Amyot's translation. In part I, I consider the possible manuscript sources for Amyot's recorded variant readings and conclude that his now lost manuscript source must have been closely affiliated to ms. Z.
