L'organisation de l'espace dans la région septentrionale de l'Epire antique (Spatial organization in the northern part of the ancient Epirus)

Abstract. - The political organization of ancient Epirus is founded on Ethnos' notion, official name of State, in contra-distinction to hellenic classical polis. In the septentrional district (South Albania), well known today, the Chaonia appears to be organized round two valleys (Drino and Bistrica) ; they constitute two geographical unities whose the ancient centers, Antigoneia and Phoinike, are surrounded by fortresses to protect the agricultural soil (chôra) like in a classical polis. This spatial organization is the same in North, Amantia, Byllis and, I think, in Illyria. The geographical plan seems to have led the Ethnos to a political organization exactly like the polis'one.Résumé. - L'organisation politique de l'Epire antique repose sur la notion d'Ethnos, nom officiel de l'Etat, par opposition à la polis grecque classique. Dans la région septentrionale (Albanie du Sud), aujourd'hui bien connue, la Chaonie semble s'être organisée autour de deux bassins (vallées du Drino et de la Bistrica), qui constituent deux entités géographiques dont les centres antiques, Antigoneia et Phoiniké, sont entourés de forteresses protégeant le terroir agricole (la chôra) comme dans une polis classique. Ce type d'organisation de l'espace se retrouve plus au Nord, à Amantia, Byllis et, semble-t-il, en Illyrie. Le cadre géographique paraît avoir conduit l'Ethnos à adopter une organisation très proche de celle de la polis.Cabanes Pierre.
