The “ I” of the historian: narrative and discourse in Dionysius of Halicarnassus. As regards form, ancient historiographical texts almost always alternate narrative passages, characterized by the disappearance of the author, and commentaries, in which the author speaks from his own point of view: this duality roughly corresponds with E. Benveniste’s distinction between “narrative” and “discourse”. However, such a distinction can be questioned, for every narrative necessarily contains some amount of discourse : even the most objective-seeming narrative is informed by the narrator’s presence.
