L'apophatisme chez les mystiques de l'Islam

The official theology of Islam is in itself strongly influenced by the apophatic : divine transcendence can only be affirmed with the passing away of all that is contingent. Islamic mystics followed this movement throought to its limits, with their own death becoming the path to initiation. With the destruction of their own little "self, there remains nothing but the divine "Self who contemplates Himself, and is alone able to contemplate himself. No matter how evolved the creature may be, he cannot attain a true and full understanding of the Divine Unicity (tawid). This spiritual experience was expressed in Sufisrn in a metaphysical doctrine : Being belongs to God alone, and in relation to him the creature is pure nothingness. The similarities to the teaching of Meister Eckhard are brought to light, insofar as they are applicable here ; thus for Islam, in its exoteric as well as its esoteric teaching, God can never be defined in terms of "Non- being".La théologie officielle de l'islam est en soi fortement marquée par l'apophatisme : la transcendance divine ne peut s'affirmer que dans l'effacement du contingent. Les mystiques de l'islam poursuivent jusqu'à l'extrême ce mouvement, en suscitant leur mort initiatique. Lorsque leur petit « soi » est annihilé, il ne reste plus que le « Soi » divin qui Se contemple, et qui est seul capable de Se contempler. En effet, la créature, aussi évoluée soit-elle, n'a pas accès à la véritable reconnaissance de l'Unicité divine (tawhîd). Les soufis ont formulé cette expérience spirituelle par une doctrine métaphysique : l'Être n'appartient qu'à Dieu, au regard duquel les créatures sont pur néant. Les affinités avec Maître Eckhart ne pouvaient être que soulignées, mais aussi leur limite ; ainsi, en islam exotérique comme ésotérique, Dieu n'est jamais qualifié de « Non-être ».Geoffroy Éric.
