In Mali as in most developing countries, farm credit which used to be offered by public development companies is now in the hands of private actors, among them microcredit institutions. However, the durability of these institutions still remains a major challenge, to be fulfilled with the production systems on which they rest. In the irrigated area of the Niger office, located 350 kilometers north of Bamako, the national capital of Mali, microcredit organisms as well as farm househoulds are severely impacted by the perverse effects of risks linked with agricultural activities and the consequences of a widespread deterioration of the production conditions in recent years.
