The mineralogical and chemical composition of 23 glossy clay layers are discussed. These can be grouped into four groups : kaolinitic, illitic, mixed and chloritic clay layers. The amount of the clay fraction varies from group to troup (74-91 vol. %). The morphological and mineralogical changes due to oxidative firing (500-1 150 °C) were studied by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The clay phases are substituted by a great amount of an amorphous/vitreous phase at temperatures exceeding 950°C ; small amounts of newly formed crystalline phases can be detected too. The gloss, resp. the reflectance, of the layers increases strongly from 950 °C upwards, with a maximum between 1 000-1 100 °C. The illitic clay layers give the best result...
