Colorimetry makes it possible to characterize the colour scheme used for several medieval wall paintings in Burgundy churches. While the base colours are the same, relying mostly on a red and a yellow (ochres ?), the manner in which they were mixed and the number of resulting tints differ between Carlovingian, Romance and Gothic paintings. The hue of the yellow pigment used is always the same, and occurs commonly ' among ochres.
