Eight sherds of different ages have been treated by solutions at pH 2, 6 and 12. The dissolved phosphorus has been measured using the method of the phosphomolybdenum blue. No organic phosphate was detected. The phosphorus is present as phosphates easily and rapidly soluble at pH 2. The solubility at pH 12 decrease by increasing the molar ratio Ca / P. The solubility at pH 6 is low. The phosphorus is most probably absorbed at the surface of the ceramic phases, especially where Al (and Fe) (for calcareous and non-calcareous ceramics) and Ca (for calcareous ceramics) cations are located.
