Detection of high levels of soil phosphorus (P) has been used for many years as an indication of the activities of Man and his animals. A variety of chemicals have been employed to extract what thought to be "archaeological" P from the soil. Recent work using P analysis on archaeological sites is described and recommendations made as to the most useful methods available.
