Dating fossil mammals, with a relatively thick (t>0,5 mm) dental enamel, can be now performed, using electron spin resonance spectrometry, in the age range from A, 50 ka to \, 10 Ma. The density of paramagnetic centers (namely 'sdpins'), accumulated with time in the different hydroxya- patite phases of the fossil enamel by the effects of natural (U, Th, K) radiations, was measured by comparison with fossils and spin standards ; the mean annual dose rate, for natural a-particles and for the others natural radiations, was calculated from the U, Th and K contents (obtained by neutron-activation) in enamel, dentine and soil.
