Chemical analysis of "Rhenish " pottery and terra sigillata is described using X-Ray Fluorescence and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, concentrating particularly on the trace elements. It is known that "Rhenish" wares were produced in two areas, broadly described as central Gaul and the Rhineland. Archaeolo gical^, distinctions can be made on the basis of decoration, typology and the presence or absence of a grey core in the fabric of the vessel, but this classification is sometimes arbitrary and no absolute criteria exist.
