To study swords of the Hallstatt period in eastern France, the authors of this paper have elaborated a system of qualitative and quantitative description. They recapitulate current terminology and propose some slight changes in order to systematize the information gathering process. Information concerning the archaeological context of the artefacts is recorded and up-dated in computer files at Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and Besançon (France). In this work the emphasis is put on the use of the machine as a rational model for the organization of the different data.
