The Greek monastery of St Margaret of Agros in Cyprus, founded in the 12th century before the Latin conquest of 1191, constantly maintained good relations with the papacy and the Latin Church of Cyprus. These relations enabled the monastery to protect its properties and incomes from encroachment by Latin clergy and secular lords. Following the Council of Florence in 1439, Abbot Jonathan was able to secure freedom from the jurisdiction of the Greek bishop of Solea, thereby placing his monastery under the direct jurisdiction of the Latin archbishop of Nicosia.
