In the course of the 20th century the nature, intensity and directions of Freiburg's relationship with its mountain environment changed considerably. Freiburg expanded mostly into the plain of the upper Rhine. Only a few industries typical of mountain areas remained. Nevertheless the mountain environment is one of the most important factors which contributed to the town's dynamic beginning at the end of the 20th century. The appreciation of Freiburg's natural scenery, particularly strong in the mindset of its conservative population since the beginning of the 19th century, is shared by new residents who have voiced a strong awareness of environmental issues.
