This study compares the evolution of the moor environments in the low mountain regions of Levézou in the French Massif Central and Hautes-Fagnes, in the Belgian Ardennes. In the past two centuries, the conversion of fallow moors is closely linked to the policies and perceptions of social groups using the space. In both regions, moors are clearly being replaced by the plantation of coniferous forests. In the Ardennes, this practice has been halted and now being debated. In Levézou, in contrast, reforestation continues without the least afterthougnt. In this changing context, biodiversity is not a clear-cut argument.
