The meaning of adherence. Ethnography of medication practices in hypertensive patients. The study of patients experience of anti-hypertensive drugs shows the impact of various social and symbolic logics. Its allows to understand how people’s medication practices are set up. Adherence to prescription relies on a logic of imputation (about the instrumental cause of high blood pressure, about side effects), a logic of appropriation (related to loyalty to treatment, testing, and integration in everyday life), a logic of self-regulation (continuity of treatment, body control and medication control). Adherence is analyzed in patient-practitioner relationship as a submission to medical authority. It may also be considered as an indicator of trust...
