L'Etat tribal du Méghalaya: observations géographiques en Inde du nord-est (The tribal state of Meghalaya : geographical remarks on north eastern India)

Summary. - Between the mingled deltas of the Ganga and the Brahmaputra, the Himalayen Range and the curve of the Indo-Burmese mountains, the plateau of Meghalaya forms a geographical area of upmost interest. Its widely varied rainfall, the highest in the world on its Southern fringe, contributes to the diversification of its landscapes and activities. In many respects, this is the last jutting out of South East Asia into the verge of the Gangetic world. Meghalaya is also a largely Christianized tribal land in a state of accelerated economic and social mutation since 1972 when, carved out from Assam within the framework of the extensively changing North Eastern India, it became a full-fledged State within the Indian Union.Résumé. - Entre les deltas mêlés du Gange et du Brahmaputra d'une part, la chaîne himalayenne et l'arc des montagnes indo-birmanes d'autre part, le plateau du Méghalaya forme un milieu géographique d'un particulier intérêt. Les énormes variations de sa pluviométrie - la plus forte du monde sur sa marge Sud - contribuent à diversifier ses paysages et ses activités. A bien des égards ultime avancée de l'Asie du Sud-Est aux marges du monde gangétique, le Méghalaya est aussi terre tribale christianisée ou animiste, en mutation économique et sociale accélérée depuis qu'en 1972, détaché de l'Assam dans le cadre d'un Nord-Est indien en plein remaniement, il est devenu un Etat de plein droit au sein de l'Union Indienne.Racine Jean.
