Saint-Nazaire-de-Marissargues à Aubais (Gard). Une église et son cimetière du VIIIe au Xe siècle

One kilometre south-east of the village of Aubais, in the western part of the Gard department, the Saint-Nazaire-de-Marissargues church and its immediate vicinity were the object of four programmed excavation campaigns between 2001 and 2004. The problem was double, as it concerned the remains of the rural prieuré on the one hand and the topochronology evolution of a church and its cemetery between the VIIIth and the Xth century on the other hand. The remains were recovered in a remarkable state of preservation as the circulation levels of the cemetery, the structures indicating graves and, partly, the floors and the church superstructures are preserved. 52 of the supposed 1500 graves – all of them rock cut and anthropomorphic – were excavated, allowing a first approach to this rural Carlovingian population. The status of the building is still unknown. Parish church ? short-lived parish ? In any case, the sanctuary remains aside from the creation movement and from the development of the village network during the feudal period.À 1 km au sud-est du village d’Aubais dans l’ouest du département du Gard, l’église Saint-Nazaire-de-Marissargues et ses abords ont fait l’objet de quatre campagnes de fouilles programmées entre 2001 et 2004. La problématique y était double, portant d’une part sur les vestiges d’un prieuré rural des XIe-XIVe siècles, d’autre part sur l’évolution topochronologique d’une église et de son cimetière du VIIIe au Xe siècle. Ces vestiges nous sont parvenus dans un remarquable état de conservation, puisque les niveaux de circulation du cimetière, les structures de signalisation des tombes et, partiellement, les sols et élévations de l’église, sont préservés. 52 des 1500 tombes estimées – toutes rupestres et anthropomorphes -ont été fouillées, permettant une première approche de cette population rurale carolingienne. Reste la question du statut de l’édifice. Église paroissiale ? Paroisse éphémère ? Quoi qu’il en soit, le sanctuaire est resté à l’écart du mouvement de genèse, puis d’expansion du réseau villageois à la période féodale.Ott Mathieu. Saint-Nazaire-de-Marissargues à Aubais (Gard).
