Two phases can be distinguished in William Jones’s career as a translator and Orientalist : in England, where he translated Arab and Persian texts and adapted them to the eighteenth-century fashion of the «Orient » ; in Bengal, where he learnt Sanskrit and defended a new approach both to the history of world literatures and to the act of translating. This article, based on a close study of Jones’s translation choices, on his adaptations and rewritings, attempts to bring to light a cultural evolution, a change in the perception of the Orient and of foreign texts which occurred in the last decades of the eighteenth century.
