Throughout the eighteenth century, the intellectual interest in the Orient was accompanied by a fascination for the material culture of the East. Whilst in England, scientific publications testified to the desire to record customs and manners, sartorial taste for the Orient was also manifest in the dress chosen for mascarades, and in portraits in oriental costumes. Cross-dressing allowed the English to revisit their identity through a process of sartorial orientalisation which resulted in the creation of a hybrid self.
