Sultans, nababs et mandarins : les enjeux du travestissement oriental en Angleterre

Throughout the eighteenth century, the intellectual interest in the Orient was accompanied by a fascination for the material culture of the East. Whilst in England, scientific publications testified to the desire to record customs and manners, sartorial taste for the Orient was also manifest in the dress chosen for mascarades, and in portraits in oriental costumes. Cross-dressing allowed the English to revisit their identity through a process of sartorial orientalisation which resulted in the creation of a hybrid self. This article investigates the political, cultural and social reasons of Oriental cross-dressing and claims that it bore aesthetic, political and cultural significance and contributed to the shaping of numerous facets of English identity.Au XVIIIe siècle, l’intérêt intellectuel pour l’Orient s’accompagne d’une fascination pour la culture matérielle orientale. Tout en consignant dans des ouvrages savants les costumes des pays orientaux, les Anglais endossent le costume oriental à l’occasion de fêtes et dans l’art pictural, et s’inventent par le vêtement une identité hybride.
