The chemist Robert Boyle left money in his will to finance a series of sermons in defence of Christian doctrines against unbelievers and Jews. The ‘ Boyle Lectures’ are usually interpreted as expressing the Newtonian natural theology of the Latitudinarians. This article, concerned with the late seventeenth century lectures, studies them against the background of the politico-theological situation of the period. It shows that while the lecturers (from different branches of the Church) were attempting to defend rational theology against both the enthusiasts and those who attempted to oppose reason and science to religion, they also needed to counter the claim that reason alone was the criterion of truth, which they believed would undermine re...
