The laws of 1901 and 1904, which prohibited the friars and nuns any teaching, brought about a very significant exodus. Twenty to thirty thousands religious reached the neighbouring countries, going as far as America or China, in order to escape « persecution » and carry on their apostolate. Most of them returned to France after the first world war. This paper is particularly concerned with the Jesuits, who continued to educate a part of the frech elite (like Georges Bidault or Charles de Gaulle) in schools they founded in Belgium and Jersey. It highlights the very contrasting way in which public opinion m each of the host countries confronted the « invasion » of the french monks, and emphasizes the pomtedness and the importance of the frenc...
