The painter Kishida Ryūsei (1891-1929), one of the most prominent Japanese painters of the twentieth century, followed a peculiar and critical path that led him from vanguard expressionism to a form of strange realism of which the series of portraits of his daughter Reiko is the most famous example. This paper has two goals : the first is to explain this evolution within the process of a re -enchantment of the world characteristic of the 1910s; the second is to introduce and to analyse Kishida Ryūsei's own conception of realism, a realism made of viscosity and fundamental unsteadiness that opens stimulating perspectives for a ...
