The archaic coinage of the extreme Western city of Massalia (Greek Marseilles) is known particularly thanks to the Auriol hoard discovered in 1867. Its contents, well examined by A. Furtwängler in 1978, contained an important part of the series characteristic of this city according to issues with multiple patterns. Numerous other coins from the Archaic period have thence appeared in several stray finds in Provence.
