Rites et stratégies d'adaptation : la chasse à courre en bocage vendéen

Ritual and Adaptation Strategies : Hunting in the Woodlands of Western France (Vendée) If coursing deer with hounds has long been and still is in many regions an expensive, exclusive sport, this is not the case in the Vendée where it involves the whole rural community. Here village shopkeepers, factory workers, farmers organized their own hunting establishment (équipage) and managed to involve, to their advantage, the local gentry and the old and new bourgeoisie. The study focuses on the relationship between the ritual aspects of the hunt and modernization processes. Using both ethnographic and historical data, the paper shows the transformations in the social and economic make up of the hunt through two great periods : before and after the Revolution and after World War II when the «green revolution» occurred. The author argues that persistent cultural codes and values are the key to understanding the dynamic and creative role of ritual in social change. She shows in particular how the creation of the new hunt has been made possible only through a traditional system of exchange which operates among the members of the hunting establishment and, outside of it, between different types of hunters. Hunting itself is shown to embody these values and to celebrate the successful adaptation of the regained community in the face of the disruptive conditions of modern life.Si la chasse à courre a longtemps été et reste encore dans bien des régions un sport de luxe élitiste, il n'en est pas de même en Vendée où elle a pris un caractère communautaire : commerçants des bourgs, ouvriers, agriculteurs montent leur propre équipage et réussissent à y intégrer les notables, nobles et bourgeois, dont il a besoin. L'article s'attache aux rapports qui relient l'aspect rituel de la chasse à courre aux processus de modernisation. En s 'appuyant à la fois sur des données ethnographiques et historiques, l'auteur y analyse les transformations des relations sociales et économiques de la chasse avant et après la Révolution et après la «révolution verte». Un de ses arguments est que, pour comprendre ces transformations, il est indispensable de saisir le rôle qu'y jouent les valeurs et les codes culturels de conduite. On y voit en particulier comment un système d'échange généralisé lié à la perception qu'ont les individus des rapports humains et à leur sens de la cohésion de la communauté a permis la création de ces équipages «démocratiques». La chasse elle-même apparaît comme une stratégie d'adaptation célébrant la communauté retrouvée et les valeurs anti-urbaines qui ont sous-tendu l'histoire de la Vendée.Bûcher Bernadette.
