Ritual and Adaptation Strategies : Hunting in the Woodlands of Western France (Vendée) If coursing deer with hounds has long been and still is in many regions an expensive, exclusive sport, this is not the case in the Vendée where it involves the whole rural community. Here village shopkeepers, factory workers, farmers organized their own hunting establishment (équipage) and managed to involve, to their advantage, the local gentry and the old and new bourgeoisie. The study focuses on the relationship between the ritual aspects of the hunt and modernization processes.
