This article examines prostitution in late medieval Sluis, the port suburb of Bruges. It aims to place prostitution in its appropriate social and urban context, within a major port town with a large transient population. By drawing on evidence contained in the bailiff’s accounts (mainly fines for brothel-keeping, but also judicial records and inventories), it is possible to assess the shape of the sex industry and its stability over time, to study prostitutes, brothel-keepers and customers, and to evaluate the sex industry's role in the town. This study also serves a second purpose, i. e. to examine the idea of marginality.
