The origins of Some Thoughts Concerning Education lie in Locke’s correspondence with friends. Our reading of the book, and perhaps of other texts by Locke, should not ignore this fact. His latent theorising about, and constant practise of, friendly correspondence suggest a fundamental relationship between truth, friendship, and correspondence, in which the writing of philosophy always takes the form of an implicit contract, which the reader is called to countersign by committing his responsibility in responding.
