Interest in « African art » is a twentieth century phenomenon, associated initially with 'avant garde' artists and collectors. The image of African sculpture as « primitive, » associated with secret and often dangerous rituals, continues to influence both popular and scholarly perceptions. The concept of « art » was foreign to most African cultures. The creation of a category of estheticized, rather thon ritual objects, served to transform these artifacts into objects of value. The commodification of African sculpture in turn was associated with the idea that these objects could be appreciated without reference to their cultural context.
