At the beginning of the « week of barricades » a shooting opposed in Algiers governmental Forces and opponents to General De Gaulle's policy of an independent Algeria. The major imbalance between the number of victims among protesters and governmental Forces (14 dead, 123 injured among governmental Forces and 8 dead, 24 injured among the crowd according to Yves Courrieres' documentary), seems to confirm the idea that gendarmes were caught in an ambush. Reading Military archives leads us to correct that imbalance : 14 policemen and 8 protesters were killed ; 59 policemen and 34 protesters had to stay in hospital.
