La naissance d'une capitale africaine : Lomé

In order to bypass the British colonial customs and their Heavy taxes, some native traders created Lomé in 1880, just outside the eastern border of the Gold Coast Colony. So, this town appeared from its very beginning as a major trade center, whose inhabitants owned privately their plots of land. Some years later, a disagreement between England and France about the town of Aneho prevented either of them to intervene effectively on the spot. But an unauthorised interference from the Gold Coast authorities in Lomé triggered an appeal from the natives to a newcomer : Germany, who established in this totaly unexpected way the « Protectorate » of Togo. In 1897, Lomé became the capital of the territory and took advantage, from 1904 onwards, of the only wharf on the coast in order to assure its permanent dominance over the Togolese urban network.C'est pour tourner les lourdes taxes douanières de l'administration coloniale anglaise que des commerçants locaux créèrent Lomé, juste au-delà de la frontière orientale de la Gold Coast, en 1880. La ville est donc dès l'origine un centre commercial majeur, dont le sol est la propriété privée de ses habitants. Par la suite, un litige entre l'Angleterre et la France à propos d'Aného empêche les antagonistes d'intervenir sur le terrain. Mais une manœuvre intempestive des responsables de la Gold Coast provoque à Lomé l'appel à une nouvelle venue, l'Allemagne, qui crée ainsi, de façon tout à fait imprévue, le « protectorat » du Togo. En 1897, Lomé devient la capitale du territoire et bénéficie à partir de 1904 du seul wharf de la côte, ce qui assurera sa prépondérance définitive sur toute l'armature urbaine du Togo.Marguerat Yves.
